“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
September 22: Joachim, Maurycy, Prosimir, Scott, Tomasz
September 23: Boguchwała, Bogusław, Elżbieta, Krzysztof, Libert, Litoriusz, Liwiusz, Piotr, Tekla, Zachariusz

AWARD PRESENTATION TO ST. MARY’S POLISH PARISH: Stephanie Black, on behalf of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, accepted the Places That Matter Award from Rev. Dianne Kempt, Chair of the Sydney Presbytery, United Church of Canada. The presentation was made at Bethel United Church in Marion Bridge at a dinner/gathering of the Sydney Presbytery. The Places That Matter Award is given by the United Church’s Sydney Presbytery (which covers much of Cape Breton) to a place of faith or organization of any denomination that demonstrates excellence in making a difference in the broader community. At the gathering, we were asked to give a presentation about the history of St. Mary’s Polish Parish and about some of our recent initiatives. We also showed images of our church and extended a warm welcome to those in attendance to visit at any time. The award was a very kind gesture and a great example of friendship among faiths and denominations.

ST. JOHN OF DUKLA (FEAST DAY SEPT. 28): In 1997, Blessed Pope John Paul II came to Krosno near Dukla to celebrate the canonization of John of Dukla. He described John as a saintly follower of St. Francis of Assisi, linking poverty to wisdom and mercy. He also praised the people of rural Poland for keeping the faith and their unique customs through good times and bad. He prayed that they would always do so. The Pope expanded on the importance of churches and sacred places built by the people themselves. He said as follows: “With heartfelt love for this land, I wish also to tell you of my appreciation for the sacrifices you have made in order to build places of worship. Often, from your hard work in the fields you have been able to extract that which makes it possible for Christ to have a place in this corner of Poland. May God reward you for these beautiful churches, the fruit of the work of your hands and the fruit of your faith.”

FROM THE HOLY FATHER’S AUDIENCE OF SEPTEMBER 18: ...The Church also accompanies us in mercy, in understanding, never judging us or closing the door, but offering forgiveness to help us return to the right course. … As our mothers never grow tired of interceding for us, no matter our failings, so too the Church stays with us always and, through prayer, puts into the hands of the Lord all our situations, difficulties and needs. And so we see in the Church a good Mother who indicates the path to walk in life, who always accompanies us in patience, mercy and understanding, and who places us in God’s hands.
“While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.” – St. Francis of Assisi
