OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
LUNCH AFTER MASS: Everyone is welcome. Please invite others after this challenging week. It will be good to get together. (If anyone can bring an item, that will be wonderful.)
Hope and pray that everyone is doing well. If there is anything you need or your neighbours need, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with the parish.
POLISH HERITAGE MONTH: This past week’s Polish Heritage Month activities will be rescheduled as stand-alone events in the coming several weeks, including the wycinanki café/recipe exchange, the session at the Whitney Pier Youth Club, the CBU session on summer school in Poland, and the St. Michael’s lecture.
THANK YOU: Huge thanks to Sophie and Roddie for coordinating the soup and lunch in the aftermath of the storm at our church. Big thank you as well for contributions to the Food Cupboard this week, especially items that don’t require heating or preparation. There is definitely a need. Any help is really appreciated.
VEHICLE PLATES: Some Nova Scotia Polonia front vehicle plates are still available.
ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY BOARD will meet this evening (Sunday) at 7:00pm by Zoom. Tom will take the meeting from the church, and anyone who does not have power is welcome to come to the church (the hall is still without power for a few more days).
TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION: At Friday’s Mass, we prayed for Truth and Reconciliation coinciding with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
EXCERPT FROM BISHOP’S NOTE ON TRUTH AND RECONCILATION: The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund has been established by Canada’s Catholic Bishops to support healing and reconciliation initiatives. The 73 dioceses in Canada have been asked to contribute a total of $30 million to this fund over five years. The annual collection is being launched in our diocese on the last weekend in September, at the start of Truth and Reconciliation Week. [Envelopes are available at the back of the church.]
ST. MICHAEL’S DAY was on Thursday. We will acknowledge the day at Mass today. We will pray for the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. We will also pray in Polish the litany to St. Michael the Archangel. It is found on page 66 of the book in the pews Przez Pokolenia: Prayers and Customs of St. Mary’s Polish Church.
FACEBOOK MESSAGE: This message was posted on the Polish Village Hall Facebook page on St. Michael’s Day (and shared by the parish Facebook page): Happy St. Michael's Day! This is a special day for the St. Michael's Polish Benefit Society -- the non-profit Society (est. in 1909) that owns and operates the Polish Village Hall. Our Society is open to any person who wishes to help promote Polish heritage and culture in Cape Breton. St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of many things -- including against storms at sea and for people who are sick. In the Polish countryside, there are many beautiful customs and sayings for St. Michael's Day. One saying goes like this: ""Gdy noc jasna na Michała, to nastąpi zima trwała." In other words, if tonight is a clear night, then it will be a long winter!
UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE: Thank you for your continued support in the midst of this terrible human suffering. Our parish’s contributions now total more than $28,000. Special envelopes are at the back of the church. Or you can contribute via our CanadaHelps page. In previous weeks’ bulletins, we had a more detailed description of how our support is helping displaced people directly on the ground with basic aid.
FOOD CUPBOARD: Please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church when you come to Mass. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall. There is a significant need in our community. Thank you for any help.
OUR POLISH-THEMED RADIO SEGMENTS: The Coast Radio 89.7 (weekdays at 3:50pm and 7:50pm or any time at coastalradio.ca). This coming week's topic will be Our Cape Breton Polonia vehicle plates with guest Bernie Paruch.
We’re always looking for sponsors and volunteers. It’s $100 for a whole week. Sponsors are recognized on air – and any dedications, too (eg. if you’re sponsoring as a memorial or as a birthday or anniversary gift). The Coast is generously redirecting the sponsorships back to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society (which produces the segments), which has been a big help to the Society. If you think you might like to sponsor a week, please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca or call 563-1226. Many thanks!
PUBLIC HEALTH PROTOCOLS – MASKS ARE STILL STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Thanks for all your kindness, patience, and co-operation through the pandemic.
COLLECTION FOR SEPTEMBER 25: (post storm Mass) will be included in next week's bulletin. Many thanks, everyone, for your kindness and generosity!
THANKS VERY KINDLY FOR YOUR DONATIONS TO OUR PARISH : We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity through the pandemic. If you are attending Mass, you will find a collection basket near the entrance and exit (since we are not passing around the basket due to the public health restrictions). Also, please free to use the mail: St. Mary’s Polish Parish, 21 Wesley St., Sydney, NS, B1N 2M5. Donations can also be made securely on-line at Canada Helps (which will email you an instant tax receipt): https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/st-marys-polish-parish/. (link to this site is provided on our parish website homepage). Thanks for your support!
GRANDPARENTS COLLAGE PROJECT: Thanks for the photos of grandparents! If you still have photos, please contact Jane Arnold at the Beaton Institute ASAP – any photos of your grandparents – or if you are a grandparent please ask your grandchildren to submit a photo of you! Jane_arnold@cbu.ca; 902-563-1690. Please note that Jane will be here on October 9 to return any photos that have been borrowed.
LITERARY CHALLENGE: As described by Consul General Wisniewski when he visited us on Sept. 11. The poem / ballad we’ll be learning is Adam Mickiewicz’s famous Powrόt Taty. More to follow...
