ASH WEDNESDAY, A DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE: Pope Francis, Patriarch Bartholomew, the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Christian leaders have asked fellow Christians to make Ash Wednesday a day of fasting and prayer in solidarity with the cause of peace and the people who are suffering in Ukraine. Pope Francis in a recent tweet wrote: “I invite everyone to make this coming 2nd March, Ash Wednesday, a Day of Fasting for Peace: let believers dedicate themselves intensively to prayer and fasting. May the Queen of Peace preserve the world from the madness of war.”

ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING:  St. Michael's Polish Benefit Society will hold a teleconference this Sunday at 7:00pm. Board members will be contacted by Tom Urbaniak with the teleconference number details.

FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass next Sunday, please consider bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item (e.g. shampoo, soap, toilet paper) to church. These items will help stock our food cupboard outside the Polish Village Hall.

IN MEMORY OF: Please remember the soul of Fr. Vincent Van Zutphen, who recently passed away. He taught for many years at St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario, and later served in many parishes—including at Margaree and Port Hood. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. OUR RADIO THEME FOR THIS COMING WEEK will be ski jumping (skoki). Thanks to Anthony Melski for lending his voice. Gorzkie żale (Bitter Lamentations)

Gorzkie żale (or Bitter Lamentations) is a Catholic devotion containing many hymns that developed in Poland during the 18th century—drawing from medieval texts and traditions. The devotion is primarily a sung reflection and meditation on the Passion of Christ and the sorrows of His Blessed Mother. The devotion consists of a three-part cycle, subdivided into five unique parts. One part of the cycle was held on each Sunday in the period of Lent, including Palm Sunday, and the entire ceremony was traditionally held on Good Friday. The devotion originated in Holy Cross Church in Warsaw and from there it spread to the whole of Poland.

The Gorzkie Żale was primarily a collection of popular songs and melodies used by people in villages around Warsaw to reflect on the Passion of Christ. In 1707 Fr. Lawrence Benik, CM,  published a booklet in Polish titled: Snopek Myrry z Ogroda Gethsemańskiego albo żałosne Gorzkiej Męki Syna Bożego [...] rospamiętywanie, translated, A Bundle of Myrrh from the Garden of Gethsemane, or the Lamentation over the Bitter Passion of the Son of God. Myrrh (used in anointing the dead) was one of the gifts the Three Wise Men brought to the newborn Jesus as a prefiguring of his passion and redemptive death. The publication of Benik’s booklet formulized the worship, and the devotion was originally referred to by the booklet’s title.  Later the title was shortened to the first words of the initial song (Gorzkie Żale przybywajcie, serca nasze przenikajcie). Finally the devotion was simply referred to as the Gorzkie Żale, but the original old-Polish language of the prayers were preserved.

The devotion of the Gorzkie Żale spread throughout the territory of Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania very quickly. Wherever Vincentian missionaries went to hold their popular missions they brought the Gorzkie Żale with them, and planted the devotion in all these places. The Gorzkie Żale soon became the central and most traditional Lenten celebration in Polish churches. During three centuries of its history some changes in the melody were introduced. There were also some attempts to translate the text into other languages, especially English. But after 300 years, the Gorzkie Żale has remained a typically Polish traditional Lenten devotion piously celebrated in Poland and in most Polish communities abroad. In 2007 there were numerous celebrations in Poland where the Vincentians had preached, especially in Holy Cross Church in Warsaw, commemorating 300 years of this Lenten devotion.
