OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

COVID-19 UPDATE: A friendly reminder that as part of the province's modified Phase 5, the following applies in our church:
-Masks remain mandatory.
-Proof of vaccination is not required for regular Masses, but will be required for funerals, weddings, and all other gatherings, meetings, and activities hosted by the parish.
-We are still encouraged to try to maintain distancing and avoid crowding. The Sala 1050 will be used for overflow if required or if anyone wishes, with distanced chairs. Also, we will still have chairs at the back of the church to give more space.
-We will still do a staged exit in an effort to avoid crowding
-Pre-registration/names before Mass are not required, but we will keep a list of people attending as they arrive, in case names are needed for contact tracing.
-Masks must still be worn for singing. We will have further discussions about how to re-introduce singing going forward.
-We kindly ask everyone to continue to use the hand sanitizer upon entering the church.

PRAYER FOR PEACE BY ST. JOHN PAUL II: On Friday, we marked the feast day (solemnity) of St. John Paul II. We started this past week’s Parish Finance Committee meeting with this prayer by the Polish pope, which we found moving.
Hear my voice, Lord, for it is that of the victims
Of all the wars and of all the violence
Between individuals and peoples.

Hear my voice, for it is that of all the children
Who suffer and will suffer
As long as people put their faith in weapons and war.

Hear my voice, when I ask you to breathe into
The heart of all human beings
The wisdom of peace
The strength of justice
And the joy of friendship.

Hear my voice when I speak for the multitudes who,
In all countries and at all times,
Do not want war and are ready to travel the way of peace.

Hear my voice and give us the strength
Always to respond to hate with love,
To injustice with a total commitment to justice,
To misery with sharing.

Hear my voice, O Lord, and grant to the world,
your eternal peace. Amen .

FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable food or personal care item for the Food Cupboard.

PIEROGI-MAKING: A huge thank you for the amazing volunteer work! About 300 dozen were prepared. We’ll have some final tallies and more details next week!

PRE-CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: Saturday, November 6, 12:00 noon to 4:00pm, Polish Village Hall. Proof of vaccination will be required. Beautiful, one-of-a-kind items. Hosted by St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.

FILM SCREENING: Monday's film screening of Andrzej Wajda’s Czlowiek z Marmuru/Man of Marble and light supper/conversation was enjoyable. A short study guide (PowerPoint) was prepared to provide some context for the film and its characters. The film, which was made during Communist times, prompts a lot of reflection about conscience and resistance. If anyone would like a copy of the short study guide, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.

RADA MEETING: This Tuesday at 7:00pm. It’s an in-person meeting in the Sala (proof of vaccination required), but with the option for Rada members to dial in as well.

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be popular Polish baby names. Thank you to Alison Etter for lending her voice.

ZNICZE (POLISH CEMETERY CANDLES): We will have a limited supply of Znicze (Polish cemetery candles) at church next week. Free-will offering to support the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society

STORIES / ANECDOTES: As we approach Remembrance Day, please feel free to share any stories or anecdotes about parishioners who are or were veterans. Frank Starzomski shared some very interesting information that he has discovered about Stanley Mayich. Writes Frank: Stanley Majic emigrated from the village of Velajci, Herzegovina (about a one half hour drive from Medjugorje) in 1935 to Canada with his mother, Julka, and younger brother, John, to join his father, Krizan, who lived on Frederick St., Whitney Pier. They were joined by his sisters, Anica (Starzomski), Jenny (Granich, Samford), in 1936. He was a member of St. Mary's Polish Parish and attended schools in Whitney Pier prior to volunteering in the Canadian army. After discharge from the army, he settled in Stellarton, NS, to play baseball. Stanley was a man of strong faith. Note: When Fr. Dennis Lamey attended St. Bridget Elementary School in Stellarton, Stanley was the custodian.

This past week, we also marked the feast day (Oct. 19) of Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko, a courageous priest who was murdered in 1984 on the orders of authorities because he supported freedom and the Solidarity movement in Poland
