POLISH HERITAGE WALK: This Wednesday at 10:30am (until 12 noon). Meet at the Polish Village Hall. Looking forward to it! This is part of Nova Scotia Heritage Month.

THIS COMING MONDAY’S FILM SCREENING (Andrzej Wajda’s Man of Marble) IS POSTPONED UNTIL MONDAY, OCTOBER 18: Unfortunately, there was a technical problem with the film/projection that cannot be resolved in time for Monday. Sorry for the inconvenience. Looking forward to the new time! We had good feedback on this past Monday’s film screening.

WE HAD A GREAT WEEK AS PART OF NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH : The sketch exhibit went well last Sunday. On Monday, we had a well-attended film screening and complimentary light supper at CBU (Poletown Lives!). On Tuesday, the Recipes Roundtable was a lot of fun. On Wednesday, we had a lecture and discussion with Dr. Roman Szelemej, President of our Twin City, Walbrzych. He was introduced by CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall. On Thursday, Ursula Melski, Peggy Ryba, and Jancia MacCormack led a crafts and cooking workshop for the Whitney Pier Youth Club. And that evening, we co-hosted with the Glace Bay Heritage Museum a wonderful session called “The Polish Pioneers of Glace Bay.” It was done interview style with Abbie Michalik and Juliette MacLeod.

WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be the famous Polish children’s poem Lokomotywa (The Locomotive) by Julian Tuwim – great for learning the language! Many thanks to Simon Gillis, in memory of Myrna Gillis, for sponsoring this week’s segment!

MEETING: The board of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society will meet this evening at 7:00pm.

FEAST DAY OF ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL is this Wednesday. To mark the day, the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society is co-hosting the Polish Heritage Walk (10:30am on Wednesday). There will be some refreshments in the hall after the walk, with public health protocols in place.

THE FINAL DAY OF NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH -- Thursday, September 30 – will be a quiet day (no events) to allow a day of reflection and solidarity for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

VIRTUAL EVENT – ON-LINE: Pier 21 – Stories of Polish Immigration – including the fascinating story of how the Polish Wawel treasures found their way to Canada. Throughout the month:
-At selected events, we will have free raffle tickets to win a truly unique gift basket with wonderful books by Polish Nova Scotian authors, including acclaimed novels, cookbooks, history and community development!
-The Good Food Bus (Cape Breton) – nutritious Polish recipe cards and samples of the month’s featured herb – lubczyk (lovage), while supplies last.
-The Coast Radio weekday Polish heritage segments (3:50 and 7:50 p.m.).
-Special NS Polish Heritage Month menu item at all Flavor restaurant locations in Sydney.
-Mahone Bay: The Kitch'Inn B&B is partnering with local restaurants to offer a Polish Getaway Package, which includes a voucher. -Cape Breton University Beaton Institute series of Facebook profiles on unique photos of Cape Breton’s Polish community from the extensive archival collection.

-Baddeck Public Library, Cape Breton: Extensive book display, as well as free Polish craft kits and free colouring books while supplies last!
-NSCC Truro Campus Library – month-long feature of Polish Canadian and Polish Nova Scotian authors, coordinated by Principal Lech Krzywonos
-Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron will be flying the Polish flag.

Monday, September 20, 6:30pm Film Screening (theme: conscience and resistance): “Poletown Lives”, Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University – free admission. An acclaimed film on a community that tried to resist forced relocation.
Tuesday, September 21, 2:00pm to 3:30pm: Recipe roundtable at the McConnell Library, Sydney, by recipe contributors to the St. Mary’s Polish Parish Cookbook. Hear some amazing recipe tips! Special reading by William Kowalski from The Best Polish Restaurant in Buffalo. Copies of the St. Mary’s Polish Parish Cookbook will be available.

Saturday, September 25: Polish Day at the Halifax Central Library. Displays, crafts, 1:00pm to 4:30pm in the Paul O’Regan Hall. Film screening of the acclaimed film “Cold War” (with English subtitles) from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.
Monday, September 27, 6:30pm: Film screening (theme: resistance and conscience) of Andrzej Wajda’s acclaimed film “Man of Marble” (with English subtitles) Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University. A fictional but realistic, fast-paced account of a 1970s journalism student who discovers hidden secrets of the Communist regime.
Wednesday, Sepember 29, at 10:30am: Walking tour: Kolonia section of Whitney Pier and future Twin City Pocket Park – meet at Victoria Road and Franklin St., Whitney Pier.
Wednesday, September 29, 7:30pm: Live virtual tour on Polish immigration experiences, hosted by Pier 21 (Canadian Museum of Immigration). More information to follow on www.PolishMonthNS.ca .
