FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable or personal care item for the Food Cupboard. In particular, personal care items (soap, shampoo, etc) appear to be especially needed at this time. Also, nutritious non-perishable breakfast items like cereal and peanut butter. Thanks for all your help! God bless!
A WARM WELCOME to our guest, William Kowalski. Bill is the featured author for this year’s Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month. He is an internationally acclaimed novelist (author of 14 novels). He lives in Mahone Bay. His latest novel is The Best Polish Restaurant in Buffalo. Bill will be signing copies of it at the exhibit right after Mass in our church, in Sala 1050. The cost per book is $15, and proceeds support the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society.
HAPPY NOVA SCOTIA POLISH HERITAGE MONTH! Some quick updates:
The month is going well!
AFTER MASS-- HISTORIC HOMES OF POLISH CAPE BRETON / WILLIAM KOWALSKI BOOK-SIGNING: There will be an exhibit in our church (Sala 1050) of Emily Sheppard's sketches of "Historic Homes of Polish Cape Breton". Plus, novelist William Kowalski will be visiting us to sign copies of his latest novel The Best Polish Restaurant in Buffalo (proceeds in support of St. Michael's Polish Benefit Society). Please share the information with friends: Members of the community can drop by any time between 10:30am and 12 noon. Public health protocols will be in place. We will be wearing masks and will proceed counter-clockwise around the perimeter. You can also suggest additional houses for Emily to sketch as part of this project! Thanks to Sophie, Roddie, and Marjorie for the gleaming floors in the Sala and for their help.
FILM SCREENING THIS MONDAY / COMPLIMENTARY LIGHT SUPPER – AT CBU: On Monday at 6:30pm (complimentary light supper starting at 6:00pm), there will be a film screening at CBU of Poletown Lives! It's a fascinating one-hour film about the struggle to save a Polish community and Polish churches in Detroit. (If you enjoyed Brianne Turczynski’s lecture on May 3 about her book, you’ll enjoy this film!) A complimentary light supper and refreshments will be served. William Kowalski will be there to do a short reading. There is no admission charge, but please e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca for directions and COVID protocols.
RECIPES ROUNDTABLE: Polish Recipes Roundtable Tuesday at 2:00pm (until 3:30pm) at the McConnell Library. Drop by to hear about different recipes – and, if you wish, to share your own memories.
LECTURE BY THE MAYOR OF OUR TWIN CITY, DR. ROMAN SZEŁEMEJ: NS Polish Heritage Month Lecture (by Zoom) Lecture with Dr. Roman Szełemej, Mayor of our twin city, Wałbrzych, will be Wednesday at 10:30am. Everyone is welcome. Dr. Szełemej will be speaking about Leadership, Healthy Communities, and Crisis Management. He will be introduced by CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall.
POLISH PIONEERS OF GLACE BAY: "A Conversation on the Polish Pioneers of Glace Bay" with Abbie Michalik and Juliette MacLeod -- Thursday, September 23, at 7:00pm at the Glace Bay Heritage Museum (Old Town Hall). This is a new addition to the schedule for NS Polish Heritage Month! Refreshments to follow. (Juliette, it’s great to have you back in town. Juliette will be at Mass on Sunday.)
THANKS so much to Jane Arnold for leading a wonderful session on Friday on researching Polish and Croatian family histories, immigration experiences, and the community benefits of this work! Thanks to everyone who attended. We had 40 people.
WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. Our radio theme for this coming week will be lubczyk (lovage), our featured herb for Nova Scotia Polish Heritage Month. Mother Rόża Czacka (1876-1961) and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński (1901-1981) (pictured below) were beatified last Sunday. They were Polish champions of service, generosity, and human rights for all. This is an important step toward sainthood.

Monday, September 27, 6:30pm: Film screening (theme: resistance and conscience) of Andrzej Wajda’s acclaimed film “Man of Marble” (with English subtitles) Boardmore Playhouse, Cape Breton University. A fictional but realistic, fast-paced account of a 1970s journalism student who discovers hidden secrets of the Communist regime.
