OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
At Mass, we will pray the Novena to Our Lady of Częstochowa, which is found on page 24 of the book Przez Pokolenia: Prayers and Customs of St. Mary’s Polish Church. We will have copies.
AUGUST 26: FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA: A NOTE ON THE JASNA GÓRA MONESTARY AND OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA: The monastery was established in 1392 by Pauline monks from Hungary. It has been Poland’s most famous place of pilgrimage for centuries. “Jasna Góra” literally means “Luminous Mount.” The original icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa is present here. On June 4, 1979, on his first visit back to his home country, St. John Paul II said: “The Poles are accustomed to link with this place, this shrine, the many happenings of their lives: the various joyful or sad moments, especially the solemn, decisive moments, the occasions of responsibility, such as the choice of the direction for one's life, the choice of one's vocation, the birth of one's children, the final school examinations, and so many other occasions. They are accustomed to come with their problems to Jasna Góra to speak of them with their heavenly Mother.”
WHY DOES OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA HAVE SLASH MARKS ON HER CHEEK? There are several histories in circulation, but the most common is about events in 1430. It is said that Hussite raiders tried to plunder the monastery at Czestochowa. When their horses would not move, one of the warriors grabbed the sacred icon and slashed it three times. When he tried to do so a fourth time, the sword fell out of his hand (some accounts even say he died). The image was recovered, but attempts to erase the slash marks were in vain. This may be a way in which Our Lady reminds us of the hurt and suffering in the world. In almost every Polish church in the world, including ours, you will see reproductions of this image, with the slash marks still in place.
STO LAT! Best wishes to Jancia LaRusic and Edyta Bączyk on the occasion of their birthdays! Wishing them lots of health and happiness! Many thanks! Wszystkiego dobrego!
FOOD CUPBOARD: If you are attending Mass this Sunday, we would be so grateful if you could bring a non-perishable or personal care item for the Food Cupboard. In particular, personal care items (soap, shampoo, etc) appear to be especially needed at this time. Also, nutritious non-perishable breakfast items like cereal and peanut butter. Thanks for all your help! God bless!
THANK YOU so much for the wonderful fruits and vegetables that were blessed last week and donated to Loaves and Fishes! Thanks to Jerry Pocius for delivering!
THANK YOU to Bernie LaRusic for his recent help with repairs and getting the new Father Greg MacLeod House fixed up. Our parish is one of the partner parishes in this project. The home will house six CBU students who are interested in deepening their Christian faith and serving the community.
