Our church is temporarily closed due to the general provincial shutdown to stop the spread of COVID-19. In the phased re-opening announced for the province on Friday, places of worship are still closed for Phase One, which begins on June 2 and will last at least two weeks. We may see a limited re-opening of churches in Phase 2. Let’s continue to check in on each other through phone calls and messages. If you need any assistance with groceries, deliveries – or any help at all – or if you know someone who could use some assistance -- please don’t hesitate to call 902-563-1226. **On Sunday, you’ll be able to find Mass for the Feast of the Holy Trinity, celebrated by Father Dennis, here: www.sainttheresasydney.com/
CONGRATULATIONS to Frank and Delores Starzomski on their 50th wedding anniversary! What a wonderful milestone! Wishing you both many blessings – and lots of health. Very best wishes from your parish family.
STO LAT! Happy birthday to Bernie LaRusic! Wishing you many blessings.
PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES: With sadness, we learned of the passing of Steve Kadchyk. Every summer for the past several years, Steve mowed the lawn at the Polish Village Hall, the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society’s lot at Victoria Road and Franklin St., as well as the Kolonia Parkette at the bottom of Bryan St. He sometimes did our church and O’Connell House property as well. He was very reliable and an all-round good, kind, generous Pier person. Steve passed away suddenly from a heart attack while at work near the Seal Island Bridge, where he was assistant coordinator for a road signage/safety crew. This came as a shock to everyone. Sincerest condolences are extended to Steve’s partner, Ruth, and to Steve’s relatives and friends. Wieczny odpoczynek racz mu dac Panie.!
HELPING OUR COMMUNITY: The parish’s recent contributions to help the community (please see last week’s bulletin for details) are being put to use by the recipient organizations immediately for the aid of our neighbours, with basic supplies in this time of heightened need. We have been asked to extend expressions of gratitude to our parish.
FOOD CUPBOARD:: Thanks so much for helping to keep our Food Cupboard in front of the Polish Village Hall filled! This is really making a difference in the community.
PARISH COOK BOOKS – SECOND PRINTING! Now available: These are the 100th anniversary cookbooks from 2013, featuring recipes and stories from many parishioners. The cookbook project was coordinated by Shari McKay. Copies are $10 each and we’d be happy to send copies anywhere. Please be in touch: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca
THE POLISH CAPE BRETONERS COLOURING BOOK: Additional copies are available. And once again, we’d be happy to send them anywhere for you. They’re $10 each.
MURAL PROJECT: Dear Friends: Please suggest Polish Cape Breton homes – standing or no longer standing – to feature in a mural project for NS Polish Heritage Month (a project of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society) – working with artist Emily Sheppard. (contact: 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca)
BULLETINS: If you know someone who is not receiving a bulletin either by e-mail or regular mail, please advise. Happy to make sure they receive a bulletin every week– in one form or another! 902-563-1226; tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca
WEEKDAY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE IN CAPE BRETON: The Coast Radio: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). And archived at coastalradio.ca. It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. Would you consider sponsoring a whole week of our radio segments for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Dziekujemy! And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This is a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, and to promote and share Polish language and culture in our region. Our radio theme for this coming week will be extending best wishes in Polish. Edyta Baczyk will be the guest. And a big thank you to Rosalie Starzomski for being this week’s sponsor!
ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY ZARZĄD (BOARD) MEETING: Sunday evening at 7:00pm by teleconference. Society members who are not on the board are always welcome to attend board meetings as well. If you would like the teleconference number, please call 902-563-1226 or e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca.
