Uroczystość Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Polski / Feast Day of Mary, Queen of Poland
The following is excerpted from an article by Martin LaMartina in Christian Culture (2009):  For the ultimate expression of Polish Catholic devotion we can look to the fruition of Polish Marian piety in the lives and in the enduring spiritual gifts to the Church of her contemporary martyrs [and] saints. The list includes St. Faustina, Blessed [now Saint] Pope John Paul II and St. Maximillian Kolbe. These sons and daughters of Poland of the twentieth century are still influential in the life of the universal Church of today … The nation’s strong devotion to Mary traces its roots back to the installation and adoration of Our Lady’s iconic image at Czestochowa. While each of these individuals has given us a unique personal witness, they are all similar in their personal dependence on the will of Christ through obedience to His Mother through the Church. A dependence summed up in the motto of John Paul II: “Totus Tuus”. This motto is also applicable to the collective soul of the Polish nation from which these saints come forth. This soul was officially recognized, and Poland’s faith was solidified, with the crowning of Mary as “Queen of Poland” through an official Act of Parliament proposed by King John Casimir.

HELPING OUT WITH FREE FOOD HAMPER PROGRAM / DELIVERIES: The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society is working with the United Way and New Dawn to deliver free food hampers (safe, no-contact delivery). The Society is looking after mainly the Pier. If you know someone who may benefit from a weekly hamper with some groceries, please call 902-563-1226 or e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca. As demand increases, we may need some additional volunteer assistance. Donations toward the program are also being gratefully received.  Please let us know if you might be able to help.  (Also, please check out our new food cupboard, photos below)

NEW DAILY RADIO SPOTS ABOUT POLISH CAPE BRETON CULTURE: Every weekday at 3:50pm and 7:50pm (FM 89.7). It’s called the “One Minute Polish Broadcast”. Learn a new Polish word, phrase, or cultural tradition. Presented by the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. This past week we had Tony Melski talking about the May 3rd holiday. Next week, we have Peggy Ryba talking about making nalesniki (Polish crepes). Would you consider sponsoring a whole week for $100? The Coast has kindly agreed to allow us to do this as a fund-raiser (they are not charging for air time). This will be a huge help to bridge the Society through the pandemic (the radio spots will continue afterwards as well), since hall revenues have dried up. Sponsors will be acknowledged on air (IMOs are welcome, birthday tributes, etc). Thanks so much! Dziekujemy!  And, we’re recruiting volunteers to go on air (pre-recorded). We’ll help you get ready. No previous experience required, and you do not have to be a Polish speaker. This will be a great way for us to bring forward members of our community, as well as promote and share Polish language and culture in our region.

ECUMENICAL SERVICES ON FACEBOOK AND RADIO: Alison is also working with a Roman Catholic colleague (Fr. Duaine Devereaux), an Anglican colleague (Rev. Dorothy Miller), colleagues at the Salvation Army, and Pastor Dave Sawlor of Lighthouse Church to do ecumenical services every week for Facebook and radio.

DAILY MASS IN POLISH: Every day at 9:00am our time, you can watch Mass in Polish at www.kolbe.ca. This is from St. Maximilian Kolbe Polish Parish in Mississauga (which is also closed to the public at this time, but where the priests are broadcasting Mass on line).

A NOTE ON THE PHOTOS BELOW: The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society was approached by the Cape Breton Local Food Hub (Alicia Lake) to construct a food cupboard in front of the Polish Village Hall. (The Society had already been helping out with food hampers and grocery deliveries.) This is the food cupboard, shown in the photos. The sign says "Take what you need, leave what you don't, give what you can. Thank you." (Thanks to Adam McCormick for the wonderful construction work! Thanks also to 60 Minute Signs for their help.)  Also, the St. Michael's Polish Benefit Society is working with the United Way of Cape Breton and New Dawn to deliver free weekly food hampers. The Society is looking after mainly the Whitney Pier neighbourhood. If you know someone who could benefit from a food hamper, please call 902-563-1226.
