OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS
SRODA POPIELCOWA / ASH WEDNESDAY: Our penitential season of Lent begins this Wednesday with the mark of the blessed ashes. The ashes are a symbol of remorsefulness, forgiveness, and our earthly mortality. Please note that this is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat. Ash Wednesday Mass will be at 6:30pm
PREPARING FOR LENT: “Over the 40 days, may the Holy Spirit give us the strength to act justly, the courage to love tenderly and the faith to walk humbly with our God, that we might rejoice in the triumph of God’s justice in Jesus at Easter.”
TŁUSTY CZWARTEK IN THE POLISH TRADITION: In the Polish tradition instead of Shrove Tuesday the Thursday before Lent is Tłusty Czwartek (literally “Fat Thursday”) and features pączki (the jelly-filled doughnuts). In Krakow and the Malopolska region it is often called “Cymbrowy Czwartek,” in honour of a festival held in defiance of a corrupt 17th century mayor
RECENT IN MEMORY OF CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BUILDING FUND:
IMO Joe Starzomski from Rosalie Starzomski
LUNCH AFTER MASS NEXT SUNDAY: Everyone is welcome. The following is a list of fellow parishioners on the list this time to please bring a dish. Thanks for your help! Edyta Baczyk, Angela and Howie Doiron, Jancia and Bernie LaRusic, Christa and Adam MacCormack, Jancia MacCormack, Ursula Melski, Joan Mosher, Sophie and Roddie O’Toole, Michelle Pellerine and family, Catherine and Herb Tucker, Tom Urbaniak, Evelyn Wojcik
LOAVES AND FISHES: If you can, please bring an item for Loaves and Fishes next Sunday. Fellow parishioner Bernie Paruch, a regular volunteer at Loaves and Fishes, notes a particular need for any root vegetables. Thank you!
GENERATING IDEAS AND PROJECTS FOR POLISH HERITAGE MONTH: Everyone is invited to think of projects large and small to mark Nova Scotia’s first ever Polish Heritage Month coming up this September – readings, small get-togethers, house concerts, student projects, artwork, etc., etc. We will be compiling a database of projects!
DESIGNING A PROPOSED SPECIALIZED “POLISH HERITAGE” LICENSE PLATE: The Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress (which is headquartered at the Polish Village Hall) is submitting a recommendation package to the province, which would (if approved) allow motorists to have an option for a Nova Scotia “Polish Heritage” license plate (similar to other specialized/themed license plates offered by the province). A portion of the fee would go into a cultural support fund. But we have to submit a proposal with some templates. We are going to be working with our very own Jeff Wilson to do sketches for your feedback (before the proposal goes in). But we’d like some initial ideas: Please feel free to speak with any of the Cape Breton reps on the board of the Atlantic Canada District of the Canadian Polish Congress: Peggy Ryba, Ursula Melski, Frank Starzomski, or Tom Urbaniak.
WINTER GOOD FOOD BUS will regularly be at the Polish Village Hall (indoors). Fresh produce at very affordable prices. There will be tables set up inside the Polish Village. Everyone is welcome. Next Food Bus visit is Saturday, February 29, 1:00pm to 2:30pm. Everyone is welcome.
THE COMMUNITY KITCHEN: Every Wednesday, 11:30am to 1:00pm at our church. Free (or donate what you can) wholesome meals in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is welcome. Thank you to all volunteers and donors.
