BLESSING OF CANDLES: At lunch today after Mass, Fr. Dennis will bless candles. The candles (unlit) will be centrepieces on the table. You are welcome to take one home. In the Polish tradition, the blessed candles are placed in a window or held at a doorway as the family prays for safety and for people suffering from natural disasters. Often, the blessed candles are specially decorated. If you take a candle home, and if you wish, please place a small donation in the envelope on the table. Anything included in the envelopes will be sent to Development and Peace – Caritas Canada (the Canadian Catholic global humanitarian agency) to help with natural disaster relief
NEXT MEETING of the Walbrzych Partner City Steering Committee will be Monday, February 10, Polish Village Hall. Continental breakfast will be provided.
NOTE FOR OUR CALENDARS: Community breakfast with the Honourable Mayann Francis, former Lieutenant Governor (from the Pier). Polish Village Hall, Friday March 13th, 8:30am. Dr. Francis will be talking about her latest book, a memoir of her career.
We had an excellent KAIROS Cape Breton potluck on January 20 in our Sala 1050 with people from our parish as well as clergy and members of other churches of various denominations. We reflected on the connection between Gospel values and protecting creation (environment). The week of March 23, we will be co-hosting guests from Care and Repair Cymru (Wales) who work with isolated and at-risk seniors. The group also drafted a letter to open up a discussion with CBU about a more coordinated approach to challenges faced by many international students related to housing and food security. We took time to pray together for Christian unity as the gathering was held during the week of prayer for Christian Unity.
NEW MONITOR IN SALA: You may have noticed the beautiful images projected during the weekly Community Kitchen. We are now in a good position to show films, PowerPoints, and presentations and to do “virtual” meetings
POLAND / EUROPE TRIP MEETING: This afternoon (February 9) at 1:30pm in Sala 1050 for anyone who might consider being part of a trip this fall. One of the proposed visits is to our sister city, Walbrzych.
We mark and honour Inter-faith Harmony Week this week. Pope Francis said: “The Document on Human Fraternity, signed one year ago, has written a new page in the dialogue between religions and people of good will. As brothers and sisters, we want to say "no" to violence, and together promote peace, life, and religious freedom.”
WINTER GOOD FOOD BUS will regularly be at the Polish Village Hall (indoors). Fresh produce at very affordable prices. There will be tables set up inside the Polish Village. Everyone is welcome. Next Food Bus visit is Saturday, February 15, 1:00pm to 2:30pm. Thanks to everyone for last Saturday’s Community Valentine’s Market and Good Food Bus.
DRAFT DONOR RECOGNITION: Final call for changes to the draft Donor Recognition (entrance to Sala 1050). The next version will be “more permanent”, but we will still be able to make changes. Please call 902-563-1226 or e-mail tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca. Dzięki!
THE COMMUNITY KITCHEN: Every Wednesday, 11:30am to 1:00pm at our church. Free (or donate what you can) wholesome meals in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is welcome. Many thanks to all donors and sponsors
"If we lose our memory, we destroy our future. May the anniversary of the Holocaust, the unspeakable cruelty that humanity learned of 75 years ago, serve as a summons to pause, to be still and to remember. We need to do this, lest we become indifferent” --A message on Twitter from Pope Francis
