THE CUSTOM OF OPŁATEK: The custom of breaking and sharing unleavened wafers (embossed with holy images) at family and community gatherings during the Christmas season (beginning with Christmas Eve) originated in Poland in the 17th century – and is today a primarily Polish, Lithuanian, and Slovak tradition. The large majority of families of Polish heritage continue to follow this custom. It is also traditional for Polish families who send Christmas cards in the mail (even to non-Polish friends) to put a piece of Opłatek inside the card. When sharing the Opłatek, it is customary to say something like the following: “I wish you much health, happiness and the Lord's bountiful blessings as well as the fulfillment of all your plans and everything you wish for yourself.”

SWIETY MIKOLAJ (ST. NICHOLAS): In Poland, Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) normally visits homes to leave gifts during the night of December 5-6. Among Polish Cape Bretoners, this sometimes happens but it has been more common over the years to have Sw. Mikolaj visit our church or hall on or close to the feast day. St. Nicholas will be in his bishop’s clothing when he visits us because, in the 4th century, he was the kind-hearted and generous Bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey. St. Nicholas is often accompanied by an angel when he visits. He sometimes asks Catechism questions. In addition to being patron saint of children, St. Nicholas is also the patron saint of sailors, merchants, and people in prisons, among others.
As we prepare for Święty Mikołaj to arrive at lunch after Mass today, we will prepare to sing this kolęda (carol) together:
Wśród nocnej ciszy (Amid the Night’s Stillness)
1.Wśród nocnej ciszy głos się rozchodzi:
Wstańcie, pasterze, Bóg się wam rodzi!
Czym prędzej się wybierajcie,
Do Betlejem pospieszajcie
Przywitać Pana. (x2)
2.Poszli, znaleźli Dzieciątko w żłobie
Z wszystkimi znaki danymi sobie.
Jako Bogu cześć Mu dali,
A witając zawołali
Z wielkiej radości. (x2)
FEAST DAY OF ST. JAN KANTY: Coming up next Monday is the feast day of St. Jan Kanty, a much-loved Polish saint, especially in the Polish diaspora. He lived between 1390 and 1474, travelled on many pilgrimages, helped the poor, and always lived modestly. While in Krakow, he gathered food and clothing to help stuggling students of the university.
TRANSLATION OF TODAY’S SECOND READING (JAS. 5:7-10): Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
" The time before Christmas calls us to ask ourselves: What is the great desire of my heart? It is God Himself who puts this ‘thirst’ in our hearts. And He comes to meet us by this route, wherever there is hunger and thirst for peace, hunger and thirst for justice, freedom and love” --A message on Twitter from Pope Francis
