GAELIC ECUMENICAL SERVICE will be today Sunday, May 19, at 3:00pm at Knox United Church, Glace Bay (270 Commercial St.) featuring two beautiful choirs that helped us when we were rebuilding St. Mary’s Polish Church (the Gaelic Ecumenical Choir and the Mira Gaelic Choir). Rev. Alison Etter will conduct the service in Gaelic. People of all backgrounds and religious traditions are warmly welcomed (you do not have to be a Gaelic speaker). Refreshments to follow.

POLONIA ARCHIVING PROJECT: Dr. Joanna Pylat will be arriving on June 20 (and staying until July 2 at the O’Connell House). She is working with CBU and the Atlantic Canada district of the Canadian Polish Congress.  Joanna will be very interested in discussing photos, recordings, documents, about Polish life in Cape Breton that could be saved for future generations in the Beaton Institute at CBU (either originals or photos of items).

DELEGATION FROM WALBRZYCH, POLAND (OUR SISTER CITY) will be visiting June 16 to 19.

WALBRZYCH PARTNER CITY STEERING COMMITTEE will meet on Monday, May 27, at 8:30am in the Polish Village Hall.

ANNIVERSARY SUPPER: We will have the 110th anniversary supper for the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society on Saturday, September 14th. More details to follow.

WHITNEY PIER COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Everyone is welcome for a warm meal and fellowship in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. Every week, we have a diverse cross-section of the community. Meals are served every Wednesday from 11:30am to 1:00pm in our Sala 1050. Meals are free of charge or donate what you can to support the project. Many thanks to all volunteers and donors. Please note that the Community Kitchen will take a break during the months of July and August, resuming 11th of September. During the summer we’ll put together rosters and calendars of volunteers and teams for the fall. If you would like to be part of the Community Kitchen Project, please call 563-1226. It has been going very well. During April, more than 500 meals were served.

IN THANKSGIVING FOR JEAN VANIER, A GREAT AND HUMBLE CATHOLIC LAY HUMANITARIAN (FOUNDER OF THE L’ARCHE COMMUNITIES), WHOSE FUNERAL WAS THIS PAST WEEK
When I told a woman I was working with that I would be travelling to Trosly-Breuil, she exclaimed, “Maybe you will meet Jean Vanier! I believe he is the world’s best Christian!” I did meet Jean Vanier, but it was not a dramatic moment. At Trosly, he did not live as a celebrity, but as a humble fellow pilgrim and companion.

One person I met, a young person from Germany, told me that after he had been living at L’Arche for some time, there came a day when everyone was preparing for a birthday party. "It is Jean Vanier’s birthday,” someone explained to him. He asked, “Who’s Jean Vanier?” Jean, I think, would not have minded.

One day, I was going with a small group to the chapel at L’Arche for what was to be a weekday Mass, when we learned that the Mass had been cancelled. The priest was not available, we learned, so, instead, there would be a brief liturgy led by Jean. One of the men I was with became sullen. “He is disappointed because there is to be no mass,” someone explained to me. I thought: Thousands of people would pay lots of money to travel to hear Jean Vanier speak! But, of course, this person wasn’t looking for Jean's words of wisdom. He was looking for Jesus, experienced through the Eucharist.

I learned this at L’Arche: To look for Jesus everywhere, in the person beside me, in the small sparks of light that reflect Christ's great light. I am so thankful for the many saints at L’Arche who reflected Christ to me, many of whom have since died in God’s love: Cécile Aubé, Bernard Masiak, Michèle Verner, and others.

Jean, may you find joy among them.
