FR. TOM LATHIGEE:  Condolences to the family, colleagues and former parishioners of Fr. Tom (former pastor), whose funeral was on Wednesday, with a special prayer vigil on Tuesday evening. Flowers and a message of prayer and sympathy and friendship were sent from our parish. May he rest in God’s peace. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Mu dać Panie. A światłość wiekuista niechaj Mu świeci.

A NOTE FROM FR. KRZYSZTOF DRZAZGA: Fellow parishioners may recall that Fr. Krszysztof from the Archdiocese of Lublin, Poland, joined us for a Mass last June (he was in Canada for a family visit and vacation). Since then, he has been regularly in touch by email and we’ve been updating him on parish events. He asked to say hello and extend best wishes to the whole parish, as well as convey his respect for the faith, hard work, warmth and perseverance of our community. In his latest message, he says: „Z całego serca życzę Wam spełnienia marzeń i wszystkiego najlepszego. Niech Maryja wyprasza Wam potrzebne łaski.” (With all my heart I wish your parish the fulfillment of its dreams and all the best. May Mary intercede to get you all the needed graces.)

TRZECIEGO MAJA / MAY 3: Please reserve on your calendar the evening of Friday, May 3 (Polish Constitution Day). On that evening at the Polish Village Hall, we are planning to release The Polish Cape Bretoners colouring book (published by the CBU Tompkins Institute). Jeff Wilson has done splendid artwork, and the text is being finalized now.

RADA MEETING: This Wednesday, February 20, following the 6:30pm Mass.

WHITNEY PIER COMMUNITY KITCHEN PROJECT: Everyone is welcome for a warm meal and fellowship in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. Meals are served every Wednesday from 11:30am to 1:00pm in our Sala 1050. Meals are free of charge or donate what you can to support the project. Many thanks to the volunteers and sponsors, and other faith communities as well as students who are collaborating with us.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: Monday, February 25, at 4:00pm. This will also serve as the Annual General Meeting for the Kitchen Society.

POLISH PRE-LENTEN CUSTOMS: We will observe some of the Polish pre-Lenten customs at our parish lunch on Sunday, March 3, after Mass.

KATIE BEATON: Katie (nee Topolnicki), who passed away at age 97 and whose funeral was on Friday at St. Leonard’s Church, was part of the Polish community in New Waterford. She was born in Poland and came to Cape Breton as a very young child. In the past several years, she connected with some of the members of our parish and shared wonderful memories. Her home was known for many years as a place of kindness and hospitality. It was touching to see some of her family wearing the Cape Breton Polish tartan scarf at the funeral Mass. May Katie rest in peace.

POLISH POP-UP TUTORIAL:   CURLING AND THE POLISH LANGUAGE
This week, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is happening in Sydney – and our community is welcoming thousands of visitors! Curling is quickly gaining popularity in Poland. The first permanent clubs started in 2002, and now there are close to 20. Poland made its first appearances in European tournaments in 2004.Polish curling terminology is a mix of Polish and English expressions. The name of the sport is the same in both languages. It’s the same pronunciation, but in the Polish language we conjugate nouns and adjectives (as well as verbs). So while the sport is “curling”, a curling club is “Klub curlingowy”.

But then end is “end” (although sometimes the Polish “runda” is used). Corner guard is “corner guard.” Skip is “skip” but the other positions will have Polish names: So lead is “pierwszy.” Second is “drugi” and the third/mate is “trzeci.”
