Dwudziesta szósta niedziela zwykŀa/26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
TODAY’S MASS INTENTION is for the late Helen Matheson, offered by Walter & Priscilla Wójcik. Eternal rest grant onto her O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon her. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Jej dać Panie, a swiatłość wiekuista niechaj Jej swieci na wieki wieków. Amen.
SWIĘTY MICHAŁ ARCHANIOŁ, MÓDL SIĘ ZA NAMI!: Feast day: Sept. 29:
St. Michael the Archangel has several important roles:
- He is the leader of Heaven’s triumph over hell.
- He intercedes to redeem souls at the hour of death.
- He weighs virtue on a perfectly balanced scale.
- He is a guardian of the Church.
St. Michael is the patron saint of, among others: people who are ill or dying, paramedics, radiologists, danger at sea, mariners, artists, bankers, police officers, soldiers, and security guards. He is often depicted confronting a serpent, as he is in the classic painting in our sanctuary (beside the stairs to the choir). In another famous image, he is seen with Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
MODLITWA DO ŚWIĘTEGO MICHAŁA/PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL:
Until 1964, this prayer, popularized by Pope Leo XIII in 1886, was commonly recited at the end of Mass. In 1994, Blessed Pope John Paul II affirmed its continuing value. The imagery evoked in the prayer is not to be understood as violent, for Christians are called to be people of peace and to be role models of charity and love. In this prayer, we are asking for spiritual perseverance, for resistance against temptation and selfish desire, and for stoic determination in our sacred mission in the world.
Święty Michale Archaniele, wspomagaj nas w walce, a przeciw niegodziwości i zasadzkom złego ducha bądź naszą obroną. Oby go Bóg pogromić raczył, pokornie o to prosimy, a Ty, Wodzu niebieskich zastępów, szatana i inne duchy złe, które na zgubę dusz ludzkich po tym świecie krążą, mocą Bożą strąć do piekła. Amen.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen
NOTES: The name “Michael” means “who is like God.” A 1970 revision of the Roman calendar joined the feasts of Gabriel and Raphael to that of Michael.

Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:

PASTORAL MINISTRY TO COMMUNITIES OF POLISH HERITAGE AROUND THE WORLD – A MEMOIR: Biskup na walizkach [A bishop on the road], published in 2011 by Sw. Jacka (publisher), co-authored with Aleksandra Klich, 176 pages. Archbishop Szczepan Wesoły (born 1926) was for many years the designated bishop for pastoral ministry to Polish communities outside Poland. In his memoirs, he tells of travels to far-flung communities (from Siberia to Libya to Brazil, and of course to Canada) providing spiritual and moral support to people of Polish descent who were sometimes struggling. But this is also the story of the resilience of Catholic communities of Polish heritage – their strong devotional life, the distinctiveness of their traditions, and the beauty of their worship. The book is written in very accessible Polish. A copy will be left on the back table for anyone who wishes to borrow it for a week.

Towarzystwo Bratniej Pomocy im. Świętego Michała
St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society
Sydney, Nova Scotia. Established in 1909.
Feast of St. Michael the Archangel (September 29)
Observed during Holy Mass at St. Mary’s Polish Church
Sunday, September 30, 2012
TOWARZYSTWO BRATNIEJ POMOCY IM. SW. MICHAŁA
The St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society was established in 1909 and incorporated in 1912 by a special Act of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. St. Michael's is the oldest continuously operating Polish society in Canada. Most of our founding members endured extreme conditions near the open hearth and blast furnaces of the Dominion Iron & Steel Co. The Society became their safety net. Until 1913, the Society comprised both Poles and Ukrainians. The Society was instrumental in the founding of St. Mary's Polish Parish, the only Polish parish east of Montreal.
The dues in 1909 were 50 cents per week. Sick benefits to a maximum of $10 per week for 13 weeks were paid if a member lost work because of illness or injury. Charter President Stanislaw Gwozdz organized an orchestra and numerous cultural events. Members soon began building a hall on Wesley St., which became a social hub for Whitney Pier and for Poles throughout industrial Cape Breton.
The present Polish Village Hall was completed in 1950, under our longest-serving president, Joseph Miecznik (1928-1930, 1933-1942, and 1946-1960). Most of the work was done by the members themselves. The Society has sponsored softball, baseball, and hockey teams. It has awarded numerous scholarships, and to this day provides facilities for local Polish dancers and dinner theatres. For more than a century, the St. Michael's Polish Association and Benefit Society has supported local families through difficult times and has helped to keep alive the spiritual and cultural traditions, the commitment to mutual aid, and the dreams for a better life of our ancestors. We have built bridges to other cultural communities and helped Polish immigrants and their descendants to make important contributions in all walks of life.
THE ST. MICHAEL’S POLISH BENEFIT SOCIETY HAS WELCOMED SEVERAL NEW MEMBERS THIS YEAR: Nicole Baker, Shauna McKay, Paul Tynski, Elaine Tynski-Shipley, Catherine Tucker, Herb Tucker. They have already been making a tremendous contribution – and we are very grateful to them for their hard work on the Society’s projects.
CURRENT EXECUTIVE: Bernie LaRusic (President), Tony Melski (Vice President), Paul Tynski (Treasurer), Robert Melski Jr. (Secretary)

HYMN PROFILE
POD TWĄ OBRONĘ
The entrance hymn will be Pod Twą Obronę. It is one of the most popular Polish church hymns. We do not know the author of the lyrics. The music was composed by Wilhelm Troszel (1823-1887), a prolific composer, operatic bass, and well-known stage actor in Warsaw.
Pod Twą obronę, Ojcze na niebie, Czy toń spokojna, czy huczą fale,
|
Under your protection, Father in heaven, Be the depths calm, or should the waves roar, |
KSIĄŻE NIEBIESKI, ŚWIĘTY MICHALE
The origins of our Post-Communion hymn are obscure. But it appears to have been a mainstay for the feast of St. Michael the Archangel since the establishment of St. Mary’s Polish Parish.
Książę niebieski, święty Michale, Za Protektora bądź i Patrona, |
Prince of Heaven, St. Michael, Be my Protector and my Patron, |
