Uroczystość Jezusa Chrystusa, Króla Wszechświata / Feast of Christ the King
CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY: In the encyclical explaining why this Feast was established, Pope Pius XI wrote: “Christ reigns, too, in the wills of men, for in him the human will was perfectly and entirely obedient to the Holy Will of God, and further by his grace and inspiration he so subjects our free-will as to incite us to the most noble endeavours. “He is King of hearts, too, by reason of his charity which exceedeth all knowledge. And his mercy and kindness which draw all to him …”

“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name. Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
November 23: Adela, Klemens, Przedwoj
November 24: Dobrosław, Emilia, Emma, Franciszek, Gerard, Jan
November 25: Katarzyna
November 26: Jan, Konrad, Leonard, Sylwester
November 27: Dominik, Maksymilian, Stojgniew, Walery
November 28: Grzegorz, Jakub, Zdzisław
November 29: Fryderyk

IMO Rose Oursen from Victoria (Pierrynowski) Aucoin
Roof fund/sponsorships of bundles of shingles will be reported separately.
ROOF UPDATE – AND FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN CONTINUES: Weather-permitting, the work should be complete in the next few days! Delays have been mostly weather-related. Our fund-raising shingle campaign continues! We are very grateful for sponsorships of bundles of shingles ($25 per bundle), which can be in memory of loved ones. There are envelopes at the back of the church. Thanks as well for reaching out to friends of the parish. In the Nov. 9 bulletin, there was a draft preliminary list of sponsors of bundles of shingles and IMOs. Please report any corrections in the coming week. We will print a detailed total tally soon, as well as an updated IMO list. We have now passed the $44,000 mark in funds raised (auction, various fund-raising events, shingle campaign, provincial heritage grant), which is a wonderful testament to everyone’s great dedication! Just for the shingle campaign, we have now exceeded $13,500. Thank you so much! Total costs will be close to $56,000, as additional work and repairs were required after careful verification (eg. re-sheathing) to ensure that this new roof will last us for the long-term without having to incur another major expense in just a few years. We are hoping to exceed $50,000 in our fund-raising, as we should still leave a cushion in the Building Fund for any emergencies. In the coming weeks, the contractor will be doing repair work inside (at their expense), due to (limited) water damage inside that happened while the roof was being done.
PIEROGI-MAKING: General request for volunteers for Sunday, November 30, and Monday, December 1. If you’re not able to assist on site, you’re invited to consider sponsoring the purchase of an ingredient. Thank you. The pierogi proceeds will go toward our new roof. A note from Peggy Ryba, who is away this weekend: Please speak with Anne Marie Campbell about advance orders for pierogi (902-562-5837).
QUILT RAFFLE FOR OUR PARISH: A big thank you to Patsy Kiley for making the beautiful quilt. Tickets are at the back of the church ($1 each).
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD: Thank you to everyone who has participated in this meaningful initiative.
OUR NEXT POLSKI PIATEK – An informal after-work gathering 6 p.m. – Friday, November 28 -- Polish Village Hall – downstairs. Everyone is welcome! Please invite friends and family. There is no charge. There will be Polish food and music. We will recognize the 105th birthday of the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. We will mark ANDRZEJKI. This event is celebrated by Polish communities around the world. It is named after the Feast of St. Andrew and is customarily the last party before Advent. There are lots of unique and fun traditions associated with it. Also, historian Barry Sheehy will present a special gift – a rare image of the Avro Arrow signed by the Polish Canadian test pilot Janusz Zurakowski. Do zobaczenia! See you there!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Applications are now being taken for the home that will be built in the Pier next year – www.habitatns.ca . Our parish is working with other faith communities to support this project.
FOOD HANDLER COURSE FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS: In Holy Redeemer Church (basement) on Monday, December 1, 6-9 p.m., with a break. This course is provided by the Province of Nova Scotia, Food Safety Division (Sean O’Toole). To register, please contact Regina Murphy at 564-0059 or by email- moss.murphy@ns.sympatico.ca . There is no charge.
Special visit to our church of Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas) on Sunday, December 7 after Mass to mark his feast day! There will be small gifts for children. Our Catechism students are learning a Polish carol.
FROM POPE FRANCIS’s MEETING YESTERDAY WITH PEOPLE LIVING WITH AUTISM AND ADVOCATES AND RESEARCHERS: From Vatican Radio: Pope Francis says we need to “break down the isolation and stigma that burden” people living with autism spectrum disorders. The Pope was speaking to participants at a three-day conference sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Health Care titled “The Person with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Animating Hope.” To meet their needs and break through their loneliness, the Pope spoke of creating a network of support and services on the ground that are comprehensive and accessible. This is the responsibility of governments and institutions, he said, but also of Christian communities, parishes and friends.
ALZHEIMER SOCIETY NOVA SCOTIA: Dear Friends, I invite you to join me at the annual Alzheimer Research Breakfast on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Centre 200 from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. The Research Breakfast gives you the opportunity to network with colleagues, support research and promote awareness in an effort to fight Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. We are pleased to welcome Teepa Snow to present at the Research Breakfast. Teepa is a leading educator on dementia, who has worked as a Registered Occupational Therapist for over 30 years. Her wealth of experience has led her to develop care techniques and training models that are used around the world. Eileen McIntyre, a local caregiver will also speak and share her experiences about dementia and caring for someone living with dementia. Seats can be purchased for $35 each or $350 for a table of 10. We expect the event to sell out quickly so reserve your seat today. Please either mail the registration form directly to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia at the address shown on the registration form, fax it to 902 422-7971, or you can purchase seats online at alzheimer.ca/ns. You can also reserve your seats by calling the Alzheimer Society at 902 422-7961. The Alzheimer Research Breakfast helps fund research initiatives that the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia supports year round. With no core-government funding, and a rising tide of dementia diagnosis in our province, it is imperative that families have access to help, which means it is vital that events keep raising funds and awareness. Your attendance at the Research Breakfast will help the Society to continue to provide support to families in our community. Thank you in advance for your consideration. We anticipate welcoming you to the annual Breakfast. Sincerely, Patricia Paruch, Chair, Sydney Research Breakfast.
