Uroczystość Najświętszego Ciała i Krwi Pańskiej / Corpus Christi: The whole Church marks Corpus Christi, emphasizing the joy of the institution of the Eucharist. In Poland and several other countries whose culture is closely tied to the Catholic faith, it has additional significance as a religious and public holiday. The first Corpus Christi procession in Poland was held in 1320 in Krakow, and colourful processions with the Blessed Sacrament and temporary outdoor altars are now held in every city and town in the country.  These are public manifestations of faith. During times of occupation and later during the Communist period, the faithful sometimes took great personal risks to participate in Boże Ciało ceremonies.

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION AT THE END OF MASS TODAY TO THE OUTDOOR ALTAR. Father Paul will offer a special blessing.

WE WILL HAVE COFFEE AND PĄCZKI (Polish doughnuts) DOWNSTAIRS AFTER MASS TODAY AND MOST SUNDAYS.  We will have a basket with a suggested flat contribution of $3 per person. These more frequent gatherings will help raise funds for the new roof, but they also respond to many parishioners’ wish to have additional informal get-togethers after Mass, not just on the Sundays every month when we have lunch or when we have special festivities. Everyone is welcome. There will be assorted flavours of paczki today.

THE NEXT “POLSKI PIATEK” [Polish Friday] – informal, after-work get-together – including some quick Polish lessons and opportunities to learn popular Polish songs – will be on Friday, June 27, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The last one was a fun and successful gathering.

Thank you, Jim, and thanks to our other dedicated property/grounds volunteers – what you do is much appreciated. If anyone would like to help with any property-related improvements/repairs  – even if it’s on a one-time ad hoc basis, please let Jim know.

INTERPRETIVE PANELS FOR THE KOLONIA IMMIGRANT HERITAGE PARKETTE (KAPLICZKA PARKETTE) have to be developed by the end of July. The Polish Consul General has kindly come on board as a sponsor. If you have photos, stories, or content about Kolonia and the immigration experience that you think should be on the panels, please call 563-1226.

NEW ROOF: We have several estimates now, and we are awaiting response to our grant application for a partial subsidy (Heritage Property Program, Province of Nova Scotia). However, we expect costs to be in the order of $40,000-$50,000. Your support to the Building Fund is greatly appreciated!

FUND-RAISING AUCTION: Please mark the date of Saturday, October 4, for a fund-raising auction for our new roof for the church – to take place at the Polish Village Hall. We will be reaching out to the broader community for donations of good and services to be auctioned. Thank you!

ST. BROTHER ALBERT CHMIELOWSKI – Feast day June 17: On August 25, 1887, he joined the Third Order of St. Francis. He chose to live in a public shelter (initially in Krakow), where he served meals and provided clothing and basic necessities to people who had no material possessions, regardless of religion or culture. Although he had a promising career as an artist, he abandoned this to establish homeless shelters and other organizations for the poor. With Blessed Sister Bernardina, he established a parallel women’s organization. He argued that one of the greatest tragedies of our time is that people who are affluent ignore – sometimes wilfully ignore – those who are in need. He was canonized in 1983 by St. John Paul II, who said that Brother Albert’s example had greatly inspired him in his own vocation.

PROPOSED RULES FOR “THE PIER” BOARD GAME (feedback welcomed!) -as proposed by the inter-faith committee that has been meeting in recent months. Please see reverse side for a rough template of the game board. Half the profits would go to the Habitat for Humanity project in Whitney Pier, and the other half to the respective faith communities as per their sales to members or friends.
•The purpose of the game is to build as many Habitat for Humanity houses as possible while competing with (but also cooperating/sharing with) other Pier faith communities, making sure that all the faith communities stay afloat.
•Each player would be allocated “resources” – five committees, three “funds”, and three property parcels.
•One Habitat house would consist of three committees, one fund, and one property parcel.
•Each player would represent a Pier faith community. There would be a minimum of two players. Each player would receive a “piece” (statuette or stylized chip that visually represents the faith community).
•Each player would start on the faith community square that corresponds with his or her chip. Movement would be clockwise. The number of spaces moved would be determined by rolling dice.
•If one of the player’s resources in any category ever falls to zero (say a place of faith runs out of funds or committees), the game ends and everyone loses.
-If you land on a place of faith, you can give resources toward a Habitat house or to the faith community that corresponds with that square. If no one represents that faith community, you must give to Habitat or to another faith community.
-If you land at a school or a public place (eg. park), you would draw a trivia card. Trivia questions will be about the Pier or about affordable housing. Mixed in with trivia cards will be chance cards (eg. forfeit one fund due to an unanticipated renovation, etc.)
-If you land on a hall, you can invite another player to make a contribution to you or to a third player. The other player could decline to do so.
-There are a couple of special squares: If someone lands on “Cape Breton Council of Churches meeting” everyone must trade a resource or contribute to Habitat. If you land on “Friends of Whitney Pier,” you can jump to any other spot on the board.
•If a player has not made a contribution to Habitat in three turns, one of that player’s already-contributed Habitat resources would be lost in order to pay property tax or renew a building permit, etc.
•Alternatively, the players could agree to go to a “co-operative only” format and set a goal of a number of Habitat houses they wish to build in a specified time (eg. one hour). Through smart plays and negotiations, they would try to strategize together to attain that goal by making appropriate trades and contributions on their turns.
