“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
June 23: Józef, Piotr, Wanda, Zenon
June 24: Dan, Danisz, Danuta, Emilia, Jan
June 25: Lucja, Łucja, Tolisława
June 26: Jan, Paweł
June 27: Maria Magdalena, Władysław, Władysława

PARISH CENTENARY BANQUET – Friday, September 6, Polish Village Hall: Before general ticket sales begin at the end of the month, we would like to invite parishioners to reserve tickets by speaking with Shauna McKay samckay@ns.sympatico.ca; 539-4354. Advance reservations at this time are specifically for parishioners, and only if you are certain you will attend. The cost is $25 per person.  Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS to the St. Michael’s Polish Benefit Society. This week, the by-law to designate the Polish Village Hall as a municipal heritage site passed First Reading at CBRM Council. This is in recognition of the hall’s cultural ties (the only Polish hall in Nova Scotia) and its association with the Society, which is the oldest Polish organization in Canada! It’s anticipated that the Mayor will be on hand for a plaquing ceremony later this summer.

FATHER O’CONNELL PLAQUE RESTORED: In time for our 100th anniversary, the much- faded plaque at the back of the church in honour of Father Leo O’Connell has been splendidly restored by Brian Tetford. Please take a look … It’s a much brighter and more visible tribute to a highly respected and fondly remembered former Pastor, who served here with great dedication for four decades!

“CHURCH NIGHTS” IN POLAND AND UKRAINE: This week, many churches in Poland and Ukraine will be open late into the night for special prayers, sacred and classical music concerts, tours, community meals, displays, and discussions. Many churches will be specially illuminated from the outside for the occasion. It’s an idea that started a few years ago in Catholic churches in the Silesian region of Poland and has spread to many dioceses and to other denominations as well. Organized by parishes (working simultaneously), the “Noce Kosciolow” gets support from senior church leaders and from civic authorities and cultural organizations. Maybe it’s an idea for us collectively to consider in the future in our community/region to promote appreciation for our sacred places and to welcome people to visit and learn more about who we are.

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR ON-LINE “VIRTUAL TOUR” AND AN 8.5 MINUTE PARISH WELCOME VIDEO ON OUR WEBSITE:  www.stmaryspolishparish.ca

OUR OPENING HYMN TODAY (Sunday, June 23, 2013):
WSZYSTKO TOBIE ODDAĆ PRAGNĘ

This more modern hymn, popular in all Polish churches, was written by the well-known orchestra director Hubert Kowalski. An older version, also still sung, is Wszystko Tobie Dziś  Oddaję, composed by Judson Wheeler van de Venter (1855-1939).

Pomóż Jezu by mnie nie zwiódł, pokusami swymi świat.

Ref.: Serce moje weź, niech Twą śpiewa cześć...

Wszystko Tobie oddać pragnę, w duszy czuję dziwny żar.
To Ty dajesz dziecku twemu, swej łaski Boży dar.

Ref.: Serce moje weź, niech Twą śpiewa cześć...
I surrender all to you and dedicate my life to you.
Jesus, I want to faithfully trust in you, always as a child of yours

Ref: I dedicate my heart, let it sing your praise.
My heart, my soul, are dedicated to you, O Lord Jesus!

I surrender all to you from my earliest years
Help me, Jesus, to not be deceived by the world’s temptations.

Ref: I dedicate my heart, let it sing your praise.

I give all to you, in my soul I feel a strange glow.
You give it to thy child, God's gift of his grace.

Ref: I dedicate my heart, let it sing your praise.
