“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
October 16: Aurelia, Gerard, Grzegorz
October 17: Lucyna, Małgorzata, Marian, Wiktor
October 18: Julian, Łukasz
October 19: Ferdynand, Piotr
October 20: Irena
October 21: Bernard, Celina, Dobromił, Elżbieta, Urszula
October 22: Filip, Halka
October 23: Iga, Ignacy, Jan, Marlena, Roman

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

FATHER RICH REPORTS:

How much is changed in one week's time! Since the storm that began on the night before Thanksgiving Day and intensified through the following day and night, so many families and lives have been impacted by the unexpected damage that the remnants of Hurricane Matthew brought to Cape Breton, the mainland and Newfoundland. As we prayed for people in far off Haiti, Cuba and the United States, now we pray for our own people including some parishioners who suffered as a result of the storm.

I am awaiting news from the Diocese or some Catholic source of relief assistance to be collected. Let us plan to have a second offering (taken up after communion) at next Sunday's Mass for relief assistance. If there is no appeal by the Church, we will donate the funds to local charities such as the United Way or the Red Cross.

PREP PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM CLASSES: Thus far, we have nine children from grades 1-8 registered. There should be a few more children registered. I hope to have before the end of the month, catechism books and hopefully we will begin on Sunday, October 30th.

FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH (beginning November 6th): At the meeting of the Parish Rada last Wednesday, I presented an alternate plan for an all English Mass that will be monthly, but if we find widespread parishioner support, it may become weekly later. We will restore an all Polish Mass at 10:00 a.m. on every First Sunday with the addition of a short homily in English and then there will be an all English Mass at 12:15 p.m. All other Sundays, there will be one Mass at 10:00 a.m. (bi-lingual) with the addition of two Polish hymns that also have English stanzas that will be sung. Our First Sunday of the month will also have a "Polish Brunch" food service that will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. This will be an ongoing fund-raiser for our rebuilding fund.

NOVEMBER ALL SOULS MONTH: We will begin a Novena of Nine Masses for all the deceased souls enrolled in the Novena. This is the tradition of "Wypominki" or remembrance of the dead. At each of the nine Masses, a portion of the names of the dead will be read followed by special prayers in place of the usual petitions (intercessions). Envelopes will be available next Sunday for the All Souls Novena.

VISITATION OF CEMETERIES: As in the past, we will restore visitation of the graves of the deceased parishioners and with a special blessing and prayers at the four cemeteries where most of our deceased loved ones are interned. This will take place November 6th. More details will be in next week's bulletin.

THE RECENT STORM AND FLOODING: Thank you to everyone who has been helping neighbours and community members affected by the recent flooding. We will have a special collection during Mass on Sunday, October 23. In the meantime, please consider donating (including on-line option) to the United Way of Cape Breton’s coordinated assistance fund: www.unitedwaycapebreton.com. Also, we are reaching out to places of faith damaged by the storm, offering to assist.

PRESENTATION: Today immediately after Mass, there will be a presentation on the recent World Youth Day in Poland by our youth pilgrims. Everyone is welcome.

DOŻYNKI / POLISH HARVEST FESTIVAL: Sunday, October 30, 3 to 6 p.m., Polish Village Hall. Due to water (storm) damage downstairs in the hall, the event will take place upstairs only.

PIEROGI (and other food) PREPARATION FOR DOŻYNKI POLISH HARVEST FESTIVAL: Thank you to everyone who volunteered. We are still reaching out for more volunteers to help with the meal prep: It will start today at 5 p.m. and continue tomorrow at the Polish Village Hall, upstairs.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS FOR HARVEST FESTIVAL: There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the church. Many thanks!

CHRISTMAS DECOR: Do you have Christmas tree stands or indoor lights that you can donate for the church? Please call Stephanie Black at 902-578-3697.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: The Whitney Pier project is well underway, although the project sustained some damage in the recent storm. Our parish has been a supporter of this project, along with other local faith communities. Volunteer crew leaders are needed. If you have experience in any trade and are interested in helping even for a few days over the next few months, please contact Adrian Wilson at NSCC: 902-563-2450; adrian.wilson@nscc.ca

FUND-RAISING FOR COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION: To complete Phase 2, we will still need to raise about $78,000. This includes several fall events, appeals for corporate and organizational sponsorships, and individual donations. Phase 2 rebuilding envelopes are at the back of the church.

IN MEMORIAM / BUILDING FUND ENVELOPES are at the back of the church. Many thanks for your support.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Please note in your calendar the following to support our rebuilding: Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival -- Sunday, October 30; Pre-Christmas bazaar: Saturday, November 19. Dinner theatre and St. Nicholas/concert dates will be announced soon.

POLISH LANGUAGE FOR BEGINNERS: Five Tuesdays starting October 25 (7 to 8:30 p.m.). In a fun, recreational setting, with a focus on learning Christmas words, phrases, and activities. Led by Edyta Baczyk. We also have mentoring for anyone who already has beginner’s Polish. Please call 902-563-1226.

PRAYER OF ST. JOHN PAUL II FOR PEACE: To the Creator of nature and man, of truth and beauty, I pray: Hear my voice, for it is the voice of the victims of all wars and violence among individuals and nations. Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all children who suffer and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war. Hear my voice when I beg You to instill into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice, and the joy of fellowship. Hear my voice, for I speak
for the multitudes in every country and in every period of history who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace. Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond to hatred with love, to injustice with total dedication to justice, to need with the sharing of self, to war with peace.
O God, hear my voice and grant unto the world Your everlasting peace.L’Osservatore Romano, 3-9-81,14]

TRANSLATION OF TODAY'S FIRST READING (EXODUS: 17-8-13): In those days, Amalek came and waged war against Israel. Moses, therefore, said to Joshua,
“Pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle after Moses had climbed to the top of the hill with Aaron and Hur. As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on.  Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady till sunset. And Joshua mowed down Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
