“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN UPDATE: Deana Lloy has advised that the Scottish manufacturer has completed the weaving, and the material is en route and should be here in a few days. Deana will then need about two weeks to complete all of the product orders.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to contact businesses. Inserted in the bulletin recently was a “central list” showing names of businesses and parishioners who volunteered to contact them. If there was more than one volunteer for a business, one person was assigned based on the first name received or if we knew that one of the volunteers has a particularly close connection to the owner. There are still businesses with “blanks,” and we welcome additional volunteers (including for businesses not on the list). At the back of the church are copies of a letter that you can show businesses you visit. If you receive a donated good or certificate to be auctioned, please bring it to church before Sunday or Wednesday Mass, and we will store it until the auction. Thank you for all your help!

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO OUR CHURCH ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12: After Mass, there will be presentations and lunch – no charge to our parishioners and friends – as part of the International Singing Storytellers Symposium and Celtic Colours. “A new era of Croatian gusle”: The presentation will focus on a young generation of gusle players, continuers of family and local traditions that established their reputation during the Croatian revival of tradition (1990s). One of the finest of these gusle players, Jure Milos (Mostar University, Bosnia and Herzegovina) will provide a musical dialogue. The session will be moderated by ethnomusicologist, musician, composer and conductor Josko Caleta (Institute of Ethnology and Folklore, Zagreb, Croatia). And during the lunch there will be a panel with these presentations:
*Songs of Identity: The Influence of Singing Storytellers in Forming the Modern Society in Croatia / Iva Drozdek, University of Alberta

ST. STANISLAUS KOSTKA (1550-1568), a patron saint of students: Born in Rostkowo, Poland, St. Stanislaus was renowned for his unshakeable spiritual devotion, even when taunted by critics and when overcome by terrible illness. He pursued his vocation as a novice in the Society of Jesus and remained studious, cheerful, and charitable despite all the adversity he had to endure. At the time of his death, it was already predicted far and wide that he would be a saint. He was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726.

PRAYING FOR PEACE IN SYRIA, IRAQ, AND UKRAINE: From Rome Reports (Aug, 26/14):  Pope Francis recalled when he prayed along with the presidents of Israel and Palestine on June 8. "The olive tree which I planted in the Vatican Gardens together with the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Presidents of Israel and Palestine, is a symbol of that peace which is secure and enduring only because it is cultivated by many hands. "With unity and charity Christ’s disciples strive to be peacemakers everywhere, in all peoples and communities, and to overcome persistent forms of discrimination, starting with those based on religion.”

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.
