“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
August 10: Bogdan, Borys
August 11: Aleksander, Zuzanna
August 12: Klara, Lech, Piotr
August 13: Diana, Helena, Jan, Kasjan, Radomiła, Wojbor
August 14: Dobrowoj, Euzebiusz

This parcel was an envelope with 700 hryvnia, which had been contributed and earmarked for our matched Ukrainian family. There is another package of supplies from our parish that is en route. Thank you to Tony Melski for arranging the shipping.

PARISH FUND-RAISING YARD SALE: Saturday, August 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. – on the parish grounds (or downstairs if raining): Can you contribute anything to be sold or help on the day of the event? Please contact Shauna McKay (539-4354). Thank you!

OUR NEXT POLSKI PIĄTEK (Polish Friday) will be on Friday, September 5, at 6 p.m. at the Polish Village Hall. Everyone is welcome! There is no charge. Enjoy some Polish food, learn some Polish words, and hear Polish songs. No knowledge of the language is required.

OCTOBER 4th – FUNDRAISING AUCTION FOR OUR NEW ROOF: Thank you to everyone who volunteered to contact businesses. Inserted in this bulletin is a “central list” showing businesses and parishioners who volunteered to contact them. If there was more than one volunteer for a business, one person was assigned based on the first name received or if we knew that one of the volunteers has a particularly close connection to the owner. There are still businesses with “blanks,” and we welcome additional volunteers (including for businesses not on the list). At the back of the church are copies of a letter that you can show businesses you visit. If you receive a donated good or certificate to be auctioned, please bring it to church before Sunday or Wednesday Mass, and we will store it until the auction. Thank you for all your help!

2014 POLISH FESTIVAL: Sunday, October 19, starting at 3 p.m. – indoors, using the Polish Village Hall plus tours of the church, and having various indoor stations, performances, and food selections, some of which will be related to the traditional Polish “Dozynki” (giving thanks for the harvest).

BENCHES FOR THE PARISH GARDEN: We have two new benches for our grotto/garden. Please don’t hesitate to spend time there for prayer and contemplation. Thank you to Shauna McKay for assembling the benches.

The Rada Duszpasterska meets tomorrow at 7 p.m.

St. Maksymilian Kolbe (1894-1941) – feast day August 14 -- was a Polish priest active in the Catholic media and in missionary work (especially in Japan) and charitable projects. Interned in the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp, he suffered the horrors of that place alongside the other prisoners, whom he cared for at every opportunity. Fr. Kolbe insisted on replacing a condemned prisoner who was being sent to his death in the starvation bunker. Fr. Kolbe, who had a strong devotion to Mary, was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982. Franciszek Gajowniczek, the condemned prisoner whose life Father Kolbe had saved, was there for the canonization.

August 15: Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven (Wniebowzięcie Najświętszej Maryi Panny): This is an important Catholic holiday in many countries, and is widely celebrated by people of Polish and Croatian descent, among others. It is also the main national holiday of the Acadian people (Notre Dame de l’Assomption). The Church teaches that "having completed the course of her earthly life, [Mary] was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." On August 15, 2004, St. John Paul II gave a sermon in Lourdes in which he reaffirmed the importance of this belief. In many places, fruits and herbs are blessed on this feast day.

REQUEST FROM POPE FRANCIS: “I ask all Catholic parishes and communities to offer a special prayer this weekend for Iraqi Christians.”

GIFT CERTIFICATES – POLISH VILLAGE HALL.  Please speak with Bernie LaRusic. Since the renovations, the hall is seeing increasing traffic as a comfortable, modern, versatile space for events large and small.

THE RENOVATED AND REFURBISHED POLISH VILLAGE HALL is a comfortable, well appointed, modernized venue for events large and small. Please consider renting the hall for your events. Please call 564-8494.

CLOSING HYMN -- Cześć Maryi [Glory to Mary]
[Translation of the first verse: Glory to Mary, honour and Glory/ O Holy Woman, honour / May the whole earth sing/ And hasten to bring her tribute]
Cześć Maryi, cześć i chwała,
Pannie Świętej cześć!
Śpiewaj, śpiewaj ziemio cała,
Hołd Jej spiesz się nieść!
Jej to ręce piastowały.
Tego co ten świat stworzył wielki I wspaniały
Syn jej a nasz brat.
Obraz Maryi, dziatwo droga,
W sercu zawsze noś,
O opiekę Matki Boga
Zawsze kornie proś
