“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
August 3: Augusta, Lidia, Szczepan
August 4: Dominik, Maria, Mironieg
August 5: Emil, Maria, Stanisława
August 6: Jakub, Sława, Stefan, Wincenty
August 7: Anna, Dobiemir, Donata, Dorota, Kajetan
August 8: Cyprian, Cyryl, Emil, Emilian, Emiliusz

OCTOBER 4th – FUNDRAISING AUCTION FOR OUR NEW ROOF: Last week we distributed a list of businesses that we have been advised to approach. If you can contact any of these (or others not listed) please write the names on the sheet that was provided and bring this to the lunch after Mass. We will then make and distribute a central list so that each person is contacted by only one parishioner.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN YESTERDAY’S EVENT IN SUPPORT OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Our church served as “headquarters” for the event. We worked in partnership with a number of other local faith communities – everyone has been super to work with. There were seven participating sites in the Pier (places of worship).  Sincere appreciation to members of our parish team that entered the event, to Peggy Ryba and our Hospitality Committee (who hosted our visitors here), to Marilyn and Joe Gillis, and Shari McKay and our tour guides; to the reps from our parish on the inter-faith organizing committee.

2014 POLISH FESTIVAL: Sunday, October 19, starting at 3 p.m. – indoors, using the Polish Village Hall plus tours of the church, and having various indoor stations, performances, and food selections, some of which will be related to the traditional Polish “Dozynki” (giving thanks for the harvest).

VISITORS WELCOME TO OUR HISTORIC CHURCH: If you have visitors this summer, please do not hesitate to bring them to Sunday and Wednesday Mass. Everyone is welcome. Also, if any visitors would like a tour of the church during the week or if you or your guests would like the church opened for quiet prayer at any time, please don’t hesitate to call 563-1226.  Please ask guests to sign our guest book at the back of the church.

PRAYING FOR PEACE ON THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WARSAW UPRISING: This week, in a gesture of friendship and reconciliation, many veterans of the uprising (who are mostly in their nineties) met with the Polish and German presidents in Berlin to open an exhibit in honour of the Polish veterans. The Warsaw uprising started on August 1, 1944. The population of the Polish capital rose up against Nazi oppression.  For the next two months, the Poles desperately held much of the city. Hundreds of thousands of people died. When the Nazis retook control, they captured or expelled the city’s civilian population and began leveling to the ground most of the city. A much talked-about film was released this year, “Powstanie Warszawskie” (Warsaw Uprising), using striking real footage. You can see a trailer and English description at www.warsawrising-thefilm.com

BLESSED EDMUND BOJANOWSKI (feast day: Aug. 7): Edmund (1814-1871) was a lay Polish Roman Catholic who devoted his life to many causes of charity and faith. He was frail and ill throughout his life, but this didn’t stop him from establishing hospitals, libraries, orphanages, and shelters. During the cholera epidemic of 1848-1849 he ministered to the sick almost without pause. He helped start an influential and humanitarian order of religious sisters, the  Sióstr Służebniczek Bogarodzicy Dziewicy Niepokalanie Poczętej (Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Conception). He was beatified by St. John Paul II in 1999.
