Zesłanie Ducha Świętego / Pentecost

TODAY’S MASS INTENTION is for Anthony Melski offered by the Melski family. Eternal rest grant onto him O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. Wieczny odpoczynek racz Mu dać Panie, a swiatłość wiekuista niechaj Mu świeci na wieki wieków. Amen

Uroczystość Zesłania Ducha Świętego / Pentecost: Pentecost – literally the fiftieth day (after Easter) – marks the descent of the Holy Spirit among the apostles and other followers of Jesus. Typical church images of the Pentecost show the Virgin Mary seated with the apostles. On this day, we pray for wisdom, piety, and discernment, among other virtues. “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.”  “Przyjdź, Duchu Święty, i zapal w nas płomień.”

The Vigil Candle this week is for Pope Francis’s June prayer intention: “That the unemployed may receive support and find the work they need to live in dignity.”

Eucharistic Minister for today: Frank Starzomski

Ushers for collection today: Bernie LaRusic, Joe Gillis

“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
June 8: Maksym, Seweryn, Wyszesław
June 9: Felicjan
June 10: Bogumił, Edgar, Małgorzata
June 11: Feliks, Radomił

THE RADA DUSZPASTERSKA MEETS TOMORROW AT 7 P.M. IN THE O’CONNELL HOUSE.

STARTING NEXT SUNDAY, WE WILL HAVE COFFEE AND PACZKI DOWNSTAIRS AFTER MASS MOST SUNDAYS. Sometimes other sweets will be available as well. We will have a basket with a suggested flat contribution of $3 per person. This will help raise funds for the new roof, but it also responds to many parishioners’ wish to have additional informal get-togethers after Mass. Everyone is welcome.

THE NEXT “POLSKI PIATEK” [Polish Friday] – informal, after-work get-together – including some quick Polish lessons – will be on Friday, June 27, at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The last one was a fun and successful get-together.

INTERPRETIVE PANELS FOR THE KOLONIA IMMIGRANT HERITAGE PARKETTE (KAPLICZKA PARKETTE) have to be developed by the end of July. The Polish Consul General has kindly come on board as a sponsor. If you have photos, stories, or content about Kolonia and the immigration experience that you think should be on the panels, please call 563-1226.

The inter-faith Habitat for Humanity group: The next meeting will be at our church on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m.  If you would like to be part of these efforts in any way, please speak with Tom Urbaniak.

A delegation of Croatian singers and storytellers will be visiting our church and hall on Sunday, October 12. More details to follow in future bulletins.

NEW ROOF: The formal campaign for the new roof will be launched next week, and we welcome ideas or initiatives for creative fund-raisers that will strengthen us as a faith community and promote our cultural heritage at the same time as raising the necessary funds.

CAPE BRETON POLISH TARTAN: We have sufficient orders to support more than the minimum order of 30 metres of Cape Breton Polish tartan fabric – and we are happily taking more orders. Thank you! For those who filled out forms, please kindly give your payment to Shauna McKay (payment can also be mailed to the church), or please speak with Shauna if you would like a reminder of what you ordered (samckay@ns.sympatico.ca). Cheques should be made out to “St. Mary’s Polish Parish.” Profits from the sale of merchandise with the Cape Breton Polish Tartan will support parish community service projects, will help send some of our youth to Krakow, Poland, for World Youth Day in 2016, and will help with the upkeep of our beautiful, historic church.

Święty Andrzej Świerad – Feast Day June 13: St. Andrew Zorard (as he is sometimes called in English) lived from about 980 to 1030. An extremely modest person, he inspired others through his intense prayer and his call to everyone to lead lives of mercy, forgiveness, and simplicity. He was greatly admired throughout rural Poland, rural Slovakia and Hungary, and served as a spiritual guide to many who themselves had reputations for holiness, including St. Benedict of Szkalka.

TODAY’S OFFERTORY HYMN:

Każda żyjąca dusza
Niech się miłością wzrusza,
Uwielbiając, wychwalając
Serce Jezusa.

Bo niebo, ani ziemia
Nic tak słodkiego nie ma,
Jako Serce Jezusowe
Pełne zbawienia.

Dla nas otwarte stoi,
Niech się grzesznik nie boi;
Niech żałuje, pokutuje,
Tu rany zgoi.

Tu źródło żywéj wody,
Pełne dla dusz ochłody;
Przybywajcie, a czerpajcie
Słodycz, tu gody.

Every living soul
Moved by love,
Praising, extolling
The heart of Jesus.

Because neither in heaven nor on earth
Is there anything so sweet
As the Heart of Jesus
Full of salvation.

For us, it stands open
Let the sinner not be afraid;
We regret and repent
And our wounds are healed.

This is the source of living water,
Calming to the soul
Go forth and reap
Sweetness and contentment.

WANTED: TRIVIA QUESTIONS ABOUT WHITNEY PIER!
St. Mary’s Polish Parish is working with all the other faith communities in the Pier on a fund-raising board game to be called “The Pier.”
Half the profits will help the faith communities. The other half will support the Habitat for Humanity build project in the Pier, which will happen in the spring of 2015.
Among other things, the board game will have trivia questions about the Pier, its people, its places of faith, its landmarks, its history, its cultures, etc.
Can you suggest one or more short trivia questions (and responses)? If so, please write them here and leave this sheet at the back of the church. If we use your question(s), you’ll be acknowledged on the board game instruction sheet.
We hope to have the board game out by Christmas.
