“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
April 13: Jan, Justyn, Małgorzata, Marcin, Przemysł, Przemysław
April 14: Julianna, Justyn, Maria, Myślimir
April 15: Anastazja, Leonid, Wacław, Wacława

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF SCHOOL IS CANCELLED ON WEDNESDAYS DUE TO WEATHER OUR WEDNESDAY MASS WILL ALSO BE CANCELLED. THIS APPLIES TO WEDNESDAYS ONLY.

NIEDZIELA PALMOWA: SPECIAL ASPECTS OF PALM SUNDAY IN THE POLISH TRADITION: Palm Sunday is of course very important for the entire Universal Church. It commemorates Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem, an event retold by all four of the biblical Gospels. All solemn Church observances, including Palm Sunday, are major events in Poland. Palms have long been substituted by posies, willows, and by elaborately and colourfully decorated branches of spruce and boxwood. Sometimes, dried flowers from the previous season are attached to the branches. Tissues and ribbons are often used to decorate the palms, making for very impressive processions. Some of the “palms” are many feet high, and some parishes even organize competitions for the making of palms.  “See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Zechariah 9:9

ADORATION DURING LENT: During the Fridays of Lent, Holy Redeemer Convent Chapel, Whitney Pier, will have Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This will take place following the 9am Friday Chapel mass and will continue until noon. Please plan on spending some time in quiet prayer and adoration.
Priests from the Sydney Deanery will be available to talk with you, and offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation, beginning on March 12 and continuing until Wednesday of Holy Week at St. Joseph Church, Sydney from 7 to 9 pm.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO OUR PARISHIONERS: Yet again, our parishioners have shown great kindness and generosity. You came through in a big way for our family in Lviv (the Ukraine/Caritas project). Krista Ann and some of our youth Catechism students took an inventory and photos. Everyone who saw the items all arranged together was touched by the response. And it was amazing to see the turnout for making pierogi last weekend. At times there were more than 30 people downstairs all hard at work on different tasks in various work stations. There was a very upbeat atmosphere. May the Blessed Mother continue to intercede for us and keep us as a strong and caring faith community, open to all and strengthened in our faith by the unique Polish customs and traditions.

A RESPECTFUL REQUEST: YOUR PHOTOS OF BLESSED POPE JOHN PAUL II AND EVENTS, PLACES RELATED TO HIM (PHOTOS TO BE RETURNED): During the lunch following our canonization celebration on Divine Mercy Sunday (April 27 at 2 p.m.) we will have a rolling slide presentation. Please share any photos: it could be from the 1984 meeting of our parishioners with the Holy Father, from our Mass following the Holy Father’s death in 2005, perhaps from visits you took to holy sites in Poland or at the Vatican. Please give your photos to Tom Urbaniak or e-mail them to him at tom_urbaniak@cbu.ca. Photos will be returned. Thank you!
