“IMIENINY” (NAME DAYS) FOR THE COMING WEEK. Help to maintain a longstanding Polish Catholic tradition by acknowledging relatives, friends, and colleagues who are celebrating their “name day,” corresponding with the feast day of a saint of the same name.  Where there is more than one saint of the same name who has been assigned a day, your “name day” is the one closest to your birthday. It is customary in the Polish tradition to acknowledge the name day of a relative or friend:
March 16: Henryka, Herbert, Izabela
March 17: Gertruda, Jan, Patryk, Zbigniew, Zbyszko
March 18: Aleksander, Boguchwał, Cyryl, Edward
March 19: Bogdan, Józef
March 20: Aleksander, Aleksandra, Bogusław, Klaudia
March 21: Benedykt, Lubomira, Mikołaj
March 22: Bogusław, Katarzyna, Kazimierz, Paweł

OGŁOSZENIA / ANNOUNCEMENTS

PLEASE NOTE THAT IF SCHOOL IS CANCELLED ON WEDNESDAYS DUE TO WEATHER OUR WEDNESDAY MASS WILL ALSO BE CANCELLED. THIS APPLIES TO WEDNESDAYS ONLY.

AFTER MASS TODAY – INFORMAL GATHERING/MEETING OF PARISHIONERS, DOWNSTAIRS: There will be an update and discussion. Refreshments and sweets will be served, and there will be some time for both collective and small-group dialogue. We hope everyone can stay for a short while.

ADORATION DURING LENT: During the Fridays of Lent, Holy Redeemer Convent Chapel, Whitney Pier, will have Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This will take place following the 9am Friday Chapel mass and will continue until noon. Please plan on spending some time in quiet prayer and adoration.

LEARNING BASIC POLISH IN A FUN, RECREATIONAL SETTING: Please see the registration form in today’s bulletin. In addition to mailing in your registration, you can also, if you wish, give the form and payment (cheque or cash) to Shauna McKay after Mass.

WHITNEY PIER FAITH COMMUNITIES AND HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: In the spring of 2015, Habitat for Humanity volunteers will be building a home not far from our church. There will be an informal focus-group roundtable this Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in our church, downstairs. We will have a conversation about how local faith communities of all denominations can work together in a supportive role to help make this worthy project happen. Adrian Wilson, Chair of Habitat’s Cape Breton Chapter and instructor at Nova Scotia Community College, will join us. Also, Cape Breton University student Vanessa Viva will present a fund-raising concept she has been researching that could help the faith communities and Habitat for Humanity at the same time.

UKRAINE/CARITAS: Further to the note in last week’s bulletin, and the favourable feedback received from fellow parishioners, our parish has linked with Caritas Polska (the Polish Catholic development agency) and its Ukrainian counterpart, Caritas Spes. They are leading an initiative called Paczka na Ukraine (Package to Ukraine). We have been paired with Parafia p.w. Sw. Marii Magdaleny in Lviv, Ukraine. We are to prepare a comprehensive help/care package for an assigned family in need (parents, son age 13 and daughters ages 11, 9, 4 and 2). Their hardship has been made worse by the current crisis in Ukraine. Krista Ann Starzomski, parish education coordinator, would like to meet downstairs after Mass today (during the larger parishioners’ gathering) with youth in our parish to prepare a shopping list based on identified needs, while still ensuring a compact package. After that, we will assign individual items to volunteer “shoppers.” If you would like to be one of our “shoppers,” please advise Krista Ann, and someone will be in touch with you!

FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH (MAR. 19): PATRON SAINT OF CANADA, AND ALSO AN IMPORTANT SOLEMNITY IN POLAND: Because of the Polish custom of celebrating name days (imieniny), and because Joseph was such a common name, the practice of “St. Joseph’s tables” (a special meal) became widespread on this day. Our choir will sing two special hymns in honour of St. Joseph today.

A PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH, OFTEN PRAYED IN TIMES OF DIFFICULTY:
Amen.

NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA (WHICH WE PRAY TOGETHER EACH WEDNESDAY IN OUR CHURCH) CAN BE FOUND IN THE NEW BOOK PRZEZPOKOLENIA: PRAYERS AND CUSTOMS OF ST. MARY’S POLISH CHURCH (in the pew pockets). Most of the old books were worn and had to be retired from the pews.

OUR OPENING HYMN TODAY – IN TRIBUTE TO ST. JOSEPH

Duszo moja, niech pieśń twoja, głosi Józefowi cześć
On wybrany, niezrównany, więc Mu hołdy trzeba nieść.
Z nami chwałę niebo całe, niech u Bożych złoży nóg,
Że bez miary swoje dary, na Józefa rozlał Bóg.
On w świętości i czystości, po Maryi pierwszym był,
Przy Panience On w stajence, pierwszy Boże Dziecię czcił.
Z nami chwałę niebo całe, niech u Bożych złoży nóg,
Że bez miary swoje dary, na Józefa rozlał Bóg
